JAMES HOWARD OLTERMAN

Officer Rank: Sr. Terrestrial Biologist
Memorial Panel: 3-E: 23
Department: Colorado Dept. of Natural Resources
End of Watch: September 4, 2002
Cause: AIRC
Age: 57
Years of Service: 30
Description: Terrestrial Biologist Olterman was killed in an aircraft accident while on a fish-stocking mission in Salida, Colorado. During the flight, the Cessna 185 encountered strong winds and was forced to make a crash landing. Investigators believe that Biologist Olterman, who was the department's most experienced pilot, purposely veered to the left to absorb the impact on the pilot's side, saving the life of fellow employee, Brandon White. Biologist Olterman was a fully commissioned officer.
