Description: Chief Oakes was shot and killed by an intoxicated man who was shooting at citizens on Main Street. The man had already shot eight people before Chief Oakes arrived at the scene. Chief Oakes heard the shots, ran to the scene and was shot three times with a breech-loading shotgun. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
