Description: Private Pierce was shot in the chest in an exchange of gunfire as he attempted to arrest a robbery suspect. Private Pierce was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect died of his injuries the next day. The suspect was a member of a gang wanted for robbing freight cars and authorities believed that he was also implicated in the deaths of Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Special Agent Lyle Clements (Panel 10-W: 24) and Special Agent William A. Smith (Panel 13-W: 24).
