Description: Marshal Pettit was beaten and shot by a group of intoxicated men. Marshal Pettit and two deputies responded to a disturbance call involving rum and gun fire. The men beat and shot Marshal Pettit and wounded his deputies. The deputies fled for help but when they returned, they found Marshal Pettit dead, with his head crushed and shot three times.
