Description: Sheriff Phillips was shot by bootleggers in retaliation to his vigorous efforts against illegal liquor operations within the county. Sheriff Phillips was offered $200 a week for "protection" by the bootleggers, which he refused. Afterwards, the bootleggers threatened his life. Sheriff Phillips was shot four times in the head and abdomen when he opened his office door. Three suspects were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
