Description: Sheriff Peak was shot when he responded to a disturbance call where a man was threatening to kill his entire family. Sheriff Peak went to the residence and ordered the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect responded by shooting Sheriff Peak three times with an L.C. Smith double-barrel shotgun. Deputy Talmadge Stephenson and Lamar County Sheriff H.C. Smith were critically wounded but survived. Sheriff Peak died five days later from his injuries. His assailant was charged with murder.
