Description: Deputy Powell and fellow deputies responded to a shots fired call in Artesia, California. As law enforcement arrived they observed a man run into a home and take a woman hostage. Deputy Powell attempted to kick the door open when the man fired two shots from inside. Deputy Powell was struck in the arm and the chest. His partner was able to drag his body to safety where paramedics attempted to save his life. Deputy Powell was transported to St. Francis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
