Description: Detective Popovich and a deputy sheriff were shot while attempting to arrest a suspect for auto theft. The officers were a part of a special auto theft detail and were watching a stolen car in a parking lot and attempted to arrest the suspect in connection with the car. The suspect gained control of the service weapon and shot Deputy Popovich in the abdomen with his own gun. The deputy was also wounded but survived. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
