Description: Deputy Pratt was shot as he and a posse attempted to arrest a gang of horse thieves. Deputy Pratt was shot at point-blank range in the chest and died at the scene. Jailer Hinman was also shot but survived. His assailant was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Five other suspects were also convicted and received prison sentences ranging from 15 to 25 years.
