Description: Deputy Jailer Powell was fatally wounded by inmates on a work crew during an escape attempt. The inmate trustees gained access to evidence lockers, acquired a gun and shot Deputy Powell in the neck and chest. Deputy Powell died three days later. The inmates fled but were captured. His assailant received a mandatory 40 year sentence.
