Description: Deputy Sheriff Phillips was shot as he attempted to arrest a suspect wanted in connection with a series of fires that had been set throughout the county. Deputy Phillips and a posse surrounded the residence, and the suspect agreed to surrender to Deputy Phillips. When Deputy Phillips entered the residence, the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding the deputy. Deputy Phillips died of his injuries the next day. The suspect was arrested but was then lynched by an angry mob.
