Description: Warden Pauling had stopped to investigate a car parked on the shoulder of Highway 74 near Port Arthur, Texas. Warden Pauling directed the female occupant to sit in his department vehicle while he spoke to the driver. As he was questioning the man, the suspect sped away dragging Warden Pauling alongside the car. The woman followed the speeding car in Warden Pauling's department vehicle. Warden Pauling fell from the suspect's car and was in turn struck by his own vehicle. A call had been placed to 911 regarding the incident by the woman driving Warden Pauling's vehicle. Warden Pauling was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect turned himself in later that day and was charged with capital murder.
