Description: Chief Philpot and Deputy Henry Reed were shot as they attempted to take a bootlegger into custody. Deputy Reed was escorting the suspect to jail when Special Officer Joseph Spivey approached and demanded custody of the suspect. Chief Philpot came to Officer Spivey?s aid. An argument ensued and a crowd gathered. Friends of the suspect intervened and released the suspect who fled. A gunfight erupted between the lawmen and the friends of the suspect. Chief Philpot was shot in the arm and neck and died at the scene. Deputy Reed died while on the way to the hospital. Special Officer Joseph Spivey and the suspect were also wounded but survived.
