Description: City Marshal Patton and Deputy Sheriff John Mount were ambushed and shot as they stood in the town square. Marshal Patton had received several threats from relatives of a man he had shot several months prior while undertaking an arrest. Marshal Patton had been tried in a court of law and acquitted of all charged due to justifiable homicide. Marshal Patton and Deputy Mount were shot several times and died at the scene. Despite a large reward offered by Governor Churchill, their assassin was not apprehended.
