Description: <p>Officer Perry was shot as he attempted to arrest a suspect for smoking and playing loud music on the PATH train. The suspect gained control of Officer Perry's weapon and shot him with his own gun. Officer Perry died from a bullet through the neck, above the bullet-proof vest he was wearing. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 46 years in prison. However, the suspect was released in 2003 after serving 22 years, the mandatory minimum term under guidelines in effect when he was sentenced.</p>
