Description: Police Officer Putnam suffered a fatal heart attack hours after a physical altercation with an armed suspect. On December 24, 1961 at 9:30 p.m., Officer Putnam responded to a domestic disturbance call and encountered a belligerent suspect who had been fighting with his wife. The suspect pulled a hunting knife on Officer Putnam and attacked him. The suspect kicked Officer Putnam in the stomach several times during the fight. Officer Putnam subdued the suspect and placed him under arrest. While at the jail, Officer Putnam complained of stomach pains and was ordered to go home and rest. Officer Putnam went home but was rushed to the hospital where he died of a heart attack a few hours later on December 25, 1961, at approximately 2:00 a.m.
