Description: On November 5, 1972, Deputy Sheriffs Rottler and Doug Oberholtzer were responding to a call when their patrol car was struck broadside by an intoxicated driver who had run a stop sign. Deputy Rottler sustained massive internal injuries and a broken back. Deputy Rottler was transported to the hospital where doctors performed surgery for over 20 hours. Deputy Rottler remained in a coma for a month. Deputy Rottler retired from the department in 1974 and required over 55 surgeries in the following years. Deputy Rottler died of complications due to the original injuries on January 3, 2010.
