Description: On the evening of September 8, 1900, a tremendous hurricane struck the Galveston, Texas area. More than five thousand citizens lost entire families and properties during this hurricane. The Galveston Police Department lost more than half of their department in the storm. Officers Richards, Adolph Howe, Samuel Tovrea and Charles Wolfe were killed in the storm as they attempted to rescue several families trapped in the downtown area. Officer Richards's wife and his child was also killed in this incident.
