Description: Sgt. Jimmie Rutledge was searching for a reported prowler when he attempted to detain a possible suspect. In the ensuing struggle, the suspect--a convicted felon--violently resisted. The suspect gained control of Sgt. RutledgeŸ??s gun, fatally shot Sgt. Rutledge, and wounded a neighbor who had come to Sgt. RutledgeŸ??s aid. The suspect then entered a home and took several hostages. After killing a 4-year old girl, the suspect chased the remaining hostages from the home, and was shot and killed by responding officers. Sgt. Rutledge was the second Berkeley Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty.
