Description: Deputy Sheriff Rafter was shot with his own gun while transporting a prisoner from Rockingham to the Augusta county jail. When Deputy Rafter stopped to assist two women walking on the exit shoulder, the handcuffed prisoner attacked him and a struggle ensued. The prisoner gained control of the service weapon and fired twice. Deputy Rafter was shot in the chest and died at the scene. The prisoner was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
