Description: On August 3, 1871, Detective Richards was attempting to place a suspect under arrest when the suspect shot him in his right arm where the bullet lodged into his armpit. The suspect then committed suicide. Detective Richards was taken to a residence where he was attended to by physicians on a daily basis. His condition remained critical and worsened steadily. Detective Richards died of liver failure seven weeks later September 14, 1871.
