Description: Deputy Rutherford and Deputy Loren Janis responded to a domestic disturbance call on U.S. Route 2. Upon arrival, the deputies spotted the suspect and gave chase. Deputy Rutherford struggled with the suspect, who gained control of the deputy's .40-caliber Glock service weapon and shot him once in the chest with his own gun. Deputy Janis was shot in the arm but survived. Deputy Rutherford was off duty but was called by the department to assist Deputy Janis. The suspect was convicted of deliberate homicide and sentenced to life in prison.
