Description: Deputy Henry Reed and Irvine Chief of Police Robert Philpot (17-E: 11) were fatally shot as they attempted to take a bootlegger into custody. Special Officer Joseph Spivey approached and demanded custody of the suspect. An argument ensued and a crowd gathered. Friends of the suspect interfered and released the suspect who fled. A gunfight erupted between the lawmen and the friends of the suspect. Chief Philpot was shot in the arm and neck and died at the scene. Deputy Reed died on the way to the hospital. Officer Spivey and the brother of the suspect were arrested and charged with murder.
