Description: Deputy Sheriff Rockwell was ambushed and shot from behind after he and Sheriff McCracken issued a levy. The officers seized horses and other property from a residence to satisfy a court judgement and were fired upon as they were leaving the premises. Deputy Rockwell died of his injuries the next day. His assailant was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison but was pardoned by the governor due to ill health after serving 17 years.
