Description: On December 29, 1916, Guard Roper was supervising a work crew at the county workhouse in Occoquan, Virginia when he was attacked and struck over the head by a convict. The convict then threw Guard Roper into a fire. Guard Roper was transported to the hospital with a fractured skull and burns. Guard Roper remained hospitalized for three months then was discharged and sent to Florida to recuperate. Guard Roper died due to complications of his initial injury within days of arriving in Florida on April 3, 1917. Two convicts were charged with murder.
