Description: In April of 1875, Sheriff Starks fatally shot a suspect who attacked him while resisting arrest. The sons of the deceased suspect swore revenge. Sheriff Starks retired from office and put his farm up for sale intending to move. On September 29, 1876, a desperado feigned interest in buying the farm and fatally shot Sheriff Starks in the head. The desperado confessed that the son of the deceased suspect had hired him to kill Sheriff Starks in exchange for $625 and a team of horses. The desperado was sentenced to death but he committed suicide.
