Description: Special Deputy Marshal Schefsky was assigned to take the federal census in the Bastrop, Texas area. A citizen found him in his buggy, bloody and unconscious and went for help. Special Deputy Schefsky had been beaten severely about the head. His census rolls, money, and weapon were missing. Special Deputy Schefsky was pronounced dead later that evening. His assailants were never apprehended.
