Description: On February 17, 1904, Deputy Jailer Sledd was accidentally shot in the head when his .38 pistol fell from its scabbard to the floor and discharged. Deputy Sledd was tending the fire in the basement of the county courthouse when the accident occurred. Deputy Sledd lost vision in one eye. On October 4, 1904, Deputy Sledd was scheduled to have the destroyed eye removed and died while under the influence of the anesthetic preparatory for the operation.
