Description: Chief Schmidt was shot in the arm and chest as he attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for assault. The suspect barricaded himself in a boathouse and held off a posse for several hours before committing suicide. Chief Schmidt died of his injuries the next day. Rutherford Police Chief George McClelland, another responding officer, was also shot but survived.
