Description: Private Stewart was shot as he attempted to arrest an extortionist. Private Stewart was assigned along with fellow officers to guard a packet placed in a cemetery which contained $10,000. A wealthy merchant had received a death threat and a demand for money. The money was placed in the cemetery as instructed. Shortly after the officers began their vigil, a man appeared and retrieved the packet. Private Stewart quickly grabbed the suspect who produced a pistol and shot Private Stewart three times. Private Stewart returned fire and killed his assailant. Private Stewart was transported to the hospital where he died.
