Description: Deputy Smith was shot and killed while he and another deputy attempted to serve a warrant on a prisoner wanted for escaping from the Evangeline Parish Jail. When Deputy Smith and a second deputy attempted to enter the house where the suspect was hiding, the suspect opened fire, striking Deputy Smith in the chest. Deputy Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
