Description: Attempting other arrest (excludes burglary, robbery and drug-related arrests). Sheriff Stephens, Marshal Ferguson, and Constable Elder went to arrest suspect for the murder of a local citizen. The suspect was sitting on the porch when the officers arrived. He produced two automatic pistols and began firing at the officers. Sheriff Stephens was killed instantly and Constable Elder was wounded in this incident.
