Description: Deputy Marshal Short was shot and killed by a prisoner whom he was transporting via train. Deputy Marshal Short was transporting a prisoner in the railroad baggage car, but entrusted one of the train's workers with his gun and the charge of watching the prisoner when he went to watch for the suspect's gang. When the railroad worker put the gun down to get a drink of water the suspect grabbed it, and shot Marshal Short in the chest. Deputy Marshal Short was mortally wounded but still managed to fatally wound the suspect.
