Officer Rank: Patrolman
Memorial Panel: 1-E: 23
Department: Danbury, Connecticut, P.D.
End of Watch: September 8, 1896
Cause: BEAT
Age: 38
Years of Service: 7
Description: Officer Sullivan was viciously beaten by several men who were drinking and causing a disturbance. He was thrown to the ground, beaten with his club, struck over the head with a wine jug and his head repeatedly slammed against a stone. He was able to return to duty for about a month in August but became ill at work and had to go home. He developed "brain fever" and died on September 8, 1896. Dr. Fierro confirms that the swelling of the brain, slow drainage and inflammation of the membrane of the brain and spinal cord that caused his death are all consistent with the injuries received.
