Description: Constable Schoonmaker and his brother (also an officer) were checking an area for two armed suspects who had just robbed a citizen at the local railroad yard. Suspects were hiding and ambushed the brothers with a hail of gunfire. Constable Schoonmaker was killed instantly when he was shot in the chest. His brother was not injured and with the aid of other deputies, the suspects were arrested.
