Description: Chief of Police Smiddy was shot and a second officer was wounded as they attempted to arrest a man who had fired several shots at his wife during a domestic disturbance. The officers were shot when they approached the suspect and informed him that he was under arrest. Chief Smiddy was shot in the abdomen and died several hours later. The second officer was shot in the leg but recovered. The suspect was killed in the gun battle with the officers.
