Description: On October 2, 1962, Police Officer Schneider was severely injured when he was struck by a driverless car as he pushed a pedestrian out of the path of the vehicle. Officer Schneider was directing traffic at an intersection when he observed an out of control vehicle coming towards him and an elderly pedestrian. The owner of the car had left the motor running while running an errand. The passenger in the vehicle stepped on the accelerator and caused the accident. The owner of the vehicle was charged with negligent homicide. Officer Schneider died of severe head injuries four days later on October 6, 1962.
