Description: Constable Smith and Chief John Rice were shot when they accompanied a suspect to his room to retrieve some papers that the suspect claimed would prove that he was not the man they were looking for. The suspect drew a weapon and shot Constable Smith in the head, killing him instantly. Chief Rice was wounded but survived. The suspect was convicted of murder and electrocuted.
