Description: Deputy Sheriff Smith was shot by four men--bootleggers--who had called out to him regarding a stolen vehicle, a ruse designed to get the deputy out of his residence. The bootleggers were angry that Deputy Smith had conducted a raid on their moonshine still and destroyed gallons of liquor. Three of the men held Deputy Smith while the fourth man shot him four times, which left him paralyzed. Deputy Smith was hospitalized until his death five months later due to blood poisoning. Deputy Smith was able to identify his assailants, and they were arrested.
