Description: Captain Spaulding, along with two colleagues, came across several men repairing a stalled automobile. The lawmen approached the group and while talking to them noticed burglary tools, nitroglycerine explosives and guns inside the car. Weapons were drawn and a gunfight ensued. Captain Spaulding was struck in the right leg and died 10 days later. One suspect died of his wounds and the remaining two were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
