Description: Private Smith and Private John Williams were attacked by a group of workers on strike that erupted into a riot. Private Smith, Private Williams and fellow officers were en route to the scene of the Pressed Steel Car Company when the mob stopped the streetcar to intercept strikebreakers. A group of strikers had just shot and killed Allegheny County Deputy Harry Exley who was riding another streetcar. Gunfire erupted and chaos ensued. Private Smith was beaten and shot and died of his injuries the next day. Private Williams was beaten then fatally shot in the head at point blank range.
