Description: Deputy Stafford was at the county jail discussing the previous night's gambling raid, where several suspects were arrested, with Attorney W. Sadler. City Marshal Ed Matthews called Deputy Stafford outside, upset about the raid. Marshal Matthews warned Deputy Stafford to," stop meddling in my business." Deputy Stafford replied that he was just doing his job. Marshal Matthew's drew his pistol and fatally shot Deputy Stafford. Marshal Matthews was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
