Description: On August 20, 2008, Patrol Captain Scantling participated in a department mandated fitness test at an outdoor racing track. Captain Scantling showed signs of exhaustion and illness after the test. While at home, he became very sick and was transported to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with heat stroke. His condition worsened overnight and he was transported to another hospital where he died on August 22, 2008.
