Description: Sheriff Sarber was badly beaten and shot by a trio of gunmen who then freed John Dillinger from the Lima jail. Dillinger was awaiting trial for bank robbery. John Dillinger and his gang went on to murder eight more officers: Officer Howard Wagner, Trooper Eugene Teague, Patrolman William O'Malley, Patrolman Martin O'Brien, Officer Francis Mulvihill, Chief Franklin Culp, Detective Henry Perrow and Undersheriff Charles Cavanagh. Two of Sheriff Sarber's assailants were sentenced to die in the electric chair. The third assailant received a life sentence. John Dillinger was killed in a shootout with FBI Agents on July 22, 1934.
