Description: Officer Scarangella and Officer Richard Rainey were shot when they stopped a van because of suspicions that it had been used in a burglary. Officer Scarangella was shot in the head and chest and remained in a coma until his death two weeks later. Officer Rainey was shot eight times but survived. The two suspects, members of the Black Panthers, were convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison
