Description: Officer Surles succumbed to his injuries sustained three weeks prior while on patrol when a tractor trailer ran into his department vehicle. An 18-wheeler tractor trailer jackknifed on the highway, struck Officer Surles' vehicle on the side, and sent the car into a ditch. Officer Surles was then airlifted to University Hospital in Birmingham where he died three weeks later after six surgeries.
