Description: Deputy City Marshal Smith and four other city marshals responded to the escape of forty convicts from the Clay Plantain Prison Farm. Sixteen of the convicts were located in Bryan, Texas. Deputy Marshal Smith and his posse stationed themselves on College Road. The heavily armed convicts began firing when they saw the road block set up by the Marshals. Deputy Marshal Smith was shot in the chest and died instantly. City Marshal Carr was wounded but survived.
