Description: Officer Sawyers had just finished his investigation of a previous traffic accident and was sitting in his patrol car completing paperwork when a vehicle pulled up next to his patrol car and opened fire. Officer Sawyers was shot once in the head with a shotgun. The suspect then stole Officer Sawyers service weapon and fled the scene. Officer Sawyers succumbed to his injuries the next morning. The suspect, who was the object of an intense manhunt, killed himself with Officer Sawyer's stolen service weapon seven weeks later.
