Description: Officer Springfield and his partner answered a shots fired call. When they arrived at the scene, a woman told them that she had been shot at. Four law enforcement officers covered the front and rear of the apartment building. The suspect suddenly appeared in the doorway and shot Officer Springfield at point-blank range in the chest. Officer Springfield returned fire striking the gunman who retreated back into the apartment. The Officers followed the suspect into the apartment and returned fire, killing the suspect. Officer Springfield and his wounded partner, Officer R.C. Sandidge, were rushed to the hospital Officer Springfield died in the emergency room. Officer Sandidge recovered from his injuries.
