Description: Chief Deputy Smith and Sheriff Elisha Barber were shot as they attempted to stop a fight at a hardware store. Sheriff Barber was shot in the chest and died at the scene. Chief Deputy Smith, who was shot three times, died of his injuries two days later. Their assailant was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
